Lack Of Sleep Makes Your Kids Hungry

by admin on August 12th, 2011

There are many reasons why children become overweight and obese; eating fatty food, drinking too much cola and not getting enough exercise, for example. To this list should now be added the computer. Computer games are infectious and addictive for adults and children alike. More and more kids, as young as 5, are playing these games long after their bedtime, resulting in a lack of sleep.

Children’s being tired and crabby first thing in the morning lends visual evidence to them not getting enough sleep. However, it’s what is happening unseen to their metabolism that has the means to create unhealthy kids.

Children who don’t get enough sleep are hungrier than other kids because of the effect lack of sleep has on two hormones, Ghrelin, which stimulates appetite, and Leptin that suppresses appetite. Not getting enough sleep produces Ghrelin and reduces the amount of Leptin produced. Result? Hunger, overeating, overweight and, perhaps, even, obesity.

Our advice is to set a time that your children should be in bed by, and be strict about it.

Toddlers, age 1 to 3 need to sleep 10 to 13 hours.

4 and 5 year olds need 10 to 12 hours.

6 to 9 year olds need about 10 hours.

10 to 12 year olds need 9 to 9 ½ hours.

Teenagers and adolescents need 8 to 9 ½ hours.

For the younger ones actually taking them to bed and reading them a story sets an enjoyable pattern; they will look forward to going to bed!

Adopting these guidelines may not make you  flavour of the month for a while, but it is a parental duty to take our kid’s health seriously.

Sweet dreams.

Roasted Pecans a Great Snack

by admin on August 11th, 2011
Posted In: Uncategorized

Roasted pecans are a favorite treat all over the country, in all types of weather and in every situation that you might find yourself. They are very nutritious, as a snack all by themselves, one you can easily carry while out on your run, or that brisk walk you favor, or in your favorite recipe. Whether it is the entree for a special occasion when you have many people coming, or in that dessert which you are making for the end of the meal, when the family and friends are gathering for that special time. Whatever the occasion, roasted pecans will add the needed touch you were looking for. A great source for great quality pecans can be found at tannerspecan.com.

There are many different ways to have them roasted, depending what you want the end result to be and what it should taste like or what recipe which they will be included in. You could add all kinds of seasoning, or spice, cinnamon being very popular, chili powder for a different flavor, salt of course is a must, with some butter to add some richness. Of course you don’t need to know which to use, if you plan on purchasing them already roasted.

If you choose to roast your own, there is a recipe which has been around for many, many years, used in many households, and tried by a variety of cooks. When they are slow roasted, they will not burn quite so easily, but you will have to watch them carefully and the end result will be worth all the trouble you went to, when you have the finished product, all a lovely dark brown color.

This recipe makes enough roasted pecans for approximately 8 people, depending how hungry they are. They will be finished in about an hour. First, your oven should be heated to 250*F, then take about 1 lb. of pecans, placing them in a 9-13 inch baking dish, then place that on the center rack of your pre-heated oven. Then proceed to roast your pecans, making sure that you stir them around often, so they won’t burn, continue to do this until they turn a nice deep brown tone. Just remember to take them out just before they are the color you want, as they will continue to brown as they cool.

Remove them from the oven, and right away, stir in the butter, mixing that around to coat all the pieces, then add the salt, while they are still hot, so it will stick to the buttered pecans. When they are completely cooled, place them in an airtight container to keep them , but if you have some hungry people around, they won’t last long enough to do this, so put them in an attractive bowl and put them out for everyone to devour.

A little known secret that you might be interested in if you’re going to roast your own pecans, to remove the tannins and the pieces of cork material, soak them in lukewarm water, and then also rinse them and you’ll find they have a much sweeter flavor.

Stay hungry. Stay foolish

by admin on July 27th, 2011
Posted In: Uncategorized

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer, ended his commencement speech to the graduates of Stanford University in 2005 with the following words, “Stay hungry. Stay Foolish.” It would be fair to say that most of the hundred of thousands who have heard or read the speech probably have forgot everything about that allocution except these memorable words, “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”

These four words represent an entire philosophy for a successful life. They mean that, if we want a successful, rewarding and interesting life, we should be in the parade and not watching the parade go by.

The only constant in life is change. Nothing stands still. Life is dynamic and not static. Yet there are those of us who, through an exercise in futility, will seek to find security in an inexistent status quo.

The, don’t make waves, don’t try anything and keep a low profile attitude is a recipe for boredom in the best-case scenario and for disaster in the worst cases. Trying to stand still in life is an impossibility and can only result in frustration, regression and ultimate failure.

It is a proven fact that a ship that remains in port will rust and wear out faster than one who travels the high sea. The expression of life is action and action is the generator of life. That’s a lesson that was not lost by the happiest and most successful among us.

If we read the biographies of great men and women, we soon find out that they were creature of action. They were involved, they were engaged, they had causes, objectives, projects and goals. They were determined. They found meaningfulness, satisfaction and validation in their work and accomplishments.

Successful living, in its true sense of the word, means implication and dedication to a cause, an ideal or an objective. In order to accomplish that, uncharted roads must be traveled, dragons have to be slain and calculated chances must be taken.

As someone so wisely said, “Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming… Dang, What a ride.”

Now, that could be exaggerating a little but it does express the essence of the concept. Successful living is not about watching the parade go by. It’s not even about joining the parade. Successful living is about leading the parade.

That’s what Steve Jobs was taking about in front of those newly graduates. He wanted to give these young minds the best possible advice that he could so that they would, not only commence their adult life on the right foot, but also stay on the right path for the rest of their life.

To do that, he left those students with four unforgettable words, “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” Nothing else was needed. The message was concise, clear and unforgettable. A giant had spoken. Who could forget, Stay hungry. Stay foolish?

Good Housekeeping Recipes

by admin on July 23rd, 2011

Have you ever wondered how to cook exactly the same meals that you have eaten at top class Restaurants? I have, and failed spectacularly. Think of great Restaurants like Pizza Hut, TGI Friday and The Hard Rock Cafe, very impressive food each and every time.

Good Housekeeping Recipes need vital ingredients to make them work. You may think turning your hand to a Pizza Hut Original Pan Pizza is easy? Or a TGI Friday Spicy Cajun Chicken Pasta can be done by guesswork – well sadly you are mistaken. These Restaurants are succesful because their food is fabulous. Using the right ingredients is paramount – you don’t need to be a great chef. Most of the chefs at these Restaurants are average, that is why these recipes are genuinely easy to follow. The ingredients and exactly the right amount of each ingredient is far more important than the chefs ability.

Imagine being able to save so much money on meals out to these Restaurants. What would you spend your savings on? A holiday, stylish clothes, your children? Well now you can cook these meals quickly and easily at home while entertaining friends maybe? Or having a family get together. How impressed would your guests be? And how proud would you be, serving top class Restaurant food in your own dining room? Well with Good Housekeeping Recipes, you can.

This is by far the most comprehensive guide i have ever come across, focusing on only the best Restaurants with the best food. You can get started in record time because each recipe is written with you in mind. Follow them step by step and you will create exactly the same top class meals you have been eating over the years in The Hard Rock Cafe, Pizza Hut and many more.

I did mention that i failed spectacularly earlier. I did fail regularly and spent many hours agonising where i went wrong. What ingredients i should have used? Oven temperature, too hot, too cool? I decided to search for a way to duplicate the dishes i have been striving to make for years – and found the perfect solution. I have been using the Good Housekeeping Recipe guide for entertaining purposes for nearly a year now and felt the need to share this experience with as many people as possible.

Don’t waste time and money on guesswork, follow the guide and you won’t go wrong.
